Dance Therapy Programs

We love our clients

Over the past 10 years, we’ve supported virtually every industry sector, including many Fortune 500 Companies and Government Agencies
The Neville Brothers were on to something with that old song “Dance Your Blues Away.” The combination of music and movement has been shown to be extremely effective at helping to do everything from increase strength to foster self-expression to – you guessed it – boost mood and get rid of the blues. By incorporating a Dance Therapy Program like the one offered by Strive, you can help your community reap all of these benefits, all while having a ton of fun.

Dance Therapy – also known as dance/movement therapy – is a psychotherapeutic way of using movement to help participants become more self-aware and to increase their emotional, social, physical and mental well-being. Participants are guided through dance movements by a highly-qualified instructor who observes and assesses and then helps to create specific goals targeted toward each participant's needs.
The Dance Therapy Programs offered today find their roots in modern dance, which was developed in the 1940s by pioneers like Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham. Unlike ballet or tap, which are form-driven, modern dance emphasized the use of movement as an expression of individuality, and dance instructor Marian Chance realized that many students used dance as an emotional outlet to express feelings they couldn't articulate. She went on to study psychology and incorporated that knowledge with dance to help form the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) in 1966.
Dance therapy is now a formally-recognized therapeutic technique that's based on the idea that the body, mind, and spirit are all connected, and movement can help participants tap into all three for better self-expression. The senses are stimulated with music, interaction, and participation, and elements of meditation and guided relaxation are combined with physical therapy for a comprehensive mind-body-spirit experience. Popular Dance Therapy programs include everything from wheelchair Zumba to Dance Party to Mind/Body Relaxation.
As an evidence-based wellness program, Dance Therapy has several well-documented benefits particularly when it comes to healing. Participants improve their sense of well-being in ways that include:
  • Social bonding, which decreases isolation and provides positive connection with a group
  • Reductions in muscle tension and anxiety from physical activity
  • Physical and mental energy boosts from rhythmic movement and music
  • A better ability to cope with the stress of disease or injury
  • New perspectives brought on by creative self-expression
  • Joy and confidence that allows negative emotions to surface and be processed
  • Improved fitness, muscle tone, and strength
  • Better thinking skills, memory, and motivation
Additionally, one study found that dance movement therapy was effective at improving symptoms of depression after just 12 weeks, while another found it helped students significantly reduce anxiety before taking an important test. Dance Movement Therapy has even been associated with a reduced risk of cancer.

When you create a Dance Therapy Program with Strive, you'll be getting elite instructors who are highly educated and fully-qualified. Our dance therapists have graduated from an American Dance Therapy Association approved graduate program and obtained R-DMT and BC-DMT credentials and/or they've received Masters Degrees and dance/movement therapy training from qualified instructors. In all cases, they've completed necessary coursework and fieldwork, along with significant dance experience. We also complete extensive background, reference, and credential checks for all of our Dance Therapy instructors.

Strive’s Dance Therapy Programs focus on helping participants achieve a variety of goals through dance therapy, including:
  • Improving self-esteem and body image
  • Developing effective communications skills and relationships
  • expanding their movement vocabulary
  • gaining insight into patterns of behaviors
  • creating new options for coping with problems

Our Dance/movement therapists help develop treatment plans and goals and collaborate with professionals from other disciplines to help participants achieve these goals using movement as the primary medium dance/movement used for observation, assessment, and therapeutic interaction.

When participants start a Strive Dance Therapy Program, they’re guided through a variety of movement styles and dance techniques – from traditional steps like ballroom dancing to more subtle forms of movement like Yoga and stretching to calm the body. Sessions focus on movement behavior, and incorporate everything from subtle to expressive and improvisational dance. Because an extensive range of dance/movement therapy techniques are used, classes allow for a wide variety of movement activities in sessions so that the needs and abilities of all participants can be accommodated.

Strive’s certified dance therapists have experience working with a wide range of ages and fitness levels and can adapt classes for individuals, small groups, or a large number of participants. Dance Therapy Programs are ideal for residential centers for seniors, retirement communities, and nurse home facilities, but they're also offered by government assisted living centers and community outreach programs, as well as rehabilitation centers and medical institutions.

Implementing your Dance Therapy Program can feel overwhelming, but Strive makes it simple by providing a project coordinator specifically for your organization. This point of contact will work with you to assess your needs and determine the scope of your program. Strive has an established nationwide network of vendors, instructors, and service providers, so it's easy to get your program running in one retirement community or in senior living centers across the country.
