Healthy Living Workshops Help Communities

Baby Boomers are retiring, and America’s population is the oldest it’s ever been. Nearly 50 million people are over age 65! With age, comes increased risk of injury, disease, and chronic pain.

Communities are seeking ways to help their members overcome health issues. Especially those caused by chronic conditions like diabetes, arthritis, or obesity. Strive healthy living workshops help communities learn about:

Managing chronic conditions
Preventing health problems from developing
Improving overall quality of life

Healthy Living Workshops Address Chronic Diseases

Arthritis, stroke, cancer, and obesity, account for 86% of percent of America’s $2.7 trillion annual health care costs. Chronic diseases are pervasive in America. At least 60% of Americans have been diagnosed with an ongoing medical condition like heart disease or diabetes. And 42% deal with more than one of these conditions simultaneously.

That’s right, chronic conditions account for seven of the top 10 causes of death. Heart disease is responsible for 25% of all deaths, killing 610,000 people each year. The most common cause of disability is arthritis. Nearly half of adults with the condition say it makes daily activities difficult. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure and blindness. Obese adults pay $1,429 more in medical costs each year, than those at healthy weights.

The good news is that many chronic diseases can be prevented or managed by behavioral changes. Four unhealthy behaviors are responsible for the majority of complications, pain, and early death from chronic conditions:

  • Not getting enough exercise
  • Eating a poor diet
  • Smoking
  • Drinking to excess

When these behaviors are addressed and replaced by healthy habits, chronic diseases improve. Sometimes, they reverse altogether. Thankfully, Strive healthy living workshops help community members learn evidence-based solutions about:

How to manage chronic conditions
Preventing health problems from developing
Improving overall quality of life

Healthy living workshops help community members learn about wellness. Which is crucial for maintaining good health. Studies show that providing communities health information and advice dramatically impacts health habits. A review of nutritional workshops found that participants did indeed:

Eat more fruits and vegetables

Reduce fat intake

Lower cholesterol

A program on managing hypertension resulted in 24% decreased risk of heart attack. The CDC’s diabetes prevention program has reduced diabetes risk by 58%. Teaching community members to adopt healthier habits and manage chronic conditions is evidence-based.

What are Positive Outcomes of Healthy Living Workshops?

Reducing risk of disease

Decreasing pain

Improving health

Achieving positive outcomes

Participants are empowered by the ability to take control of their health and manage chronic conditions. This increases self-confidence and self-esteem.

How are Strive Healthy Living Workshops Structured?

Strive healthy living workshops are held over a six-week period. This allows participants to get familiar with their instructor. They’re able to bond with classmates. As a result, they can implement healthy habits they learn. Participants meet for 2 ½ hours each week. They learn how to manage their medications and improve relationships with friends and family. And learn health-specific information, like how to:

Improve strength and flexibility through exercise
Eat healthfully for proper nutrition
Relax and manage stress
Deal with mental and emotional strain of chronic disease
Manage existing chronic conditions, like diabetes
and more!

What are Healthy Living Workshops like?

They’re interactive to create a supportive, safe environment. Participants engage with one another, offer encouragement, and realize they’re not alone. Often, friends and family members join the workshops. Anyone in the community looking to develop healthier habits is invited to attend.

Who are Strive Healthy Living Instructors?

To help participants feel comfortable, Strive hires two healthy living workshop instructors for each class. These are trained professionals. At least one of them also has a chronic condition. Strive performs extensive prescreening. This includes checking credentials, backgrounds, and references. Strive Well-Being instructors have experience working with a range of ages. They’re knowledgeable about a variety of chronic diseases.
