Oil Pulling is an ancient Indian practice that refers to swishing oil in the mouth to remove toxins and other harmful bacteria. In addition to the detoxification of the body, this simple practice has the added benefit of natural whitening teeth, improving bad breath, and strengthening gums.

A few weeks ago, a good friend of mine introduced me to this daily morning ritual she undergoes called “oil pulling”. She and I commonly discuss alternative and homeopathic strategies that optimize our health, ranging from green juice to yoga to meditation. Many of the things we discuss are fairly common practices, but I had never heard of this idea of oil swishing, which is formally referred to as oil pulling. I set out to investigate and have since incorporated this practice into my morning routine and highly suggest you do the same. (Hence I’m writing a blog post about it) In the past few weeks, I have noticed smoother teeth enamel and cleared sinuses. I found countless testimonials of others online that have experienced notable benefits from oil pulling, ranging from improved hormonal balances to treating heart disease.

So to tease you a little with some background, oil pulling is an ancient practice that stems from India thousands of years ago. It was first introduced into the United States in the early 90’s by Dr. Karach who found much success with it in his medical practice. Since our mouths are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and other micro-organisms that can enter into the bloodstream, you can see the utility in removing them. Many online resources have referenced that oil pulling has the ability to help with arthritis, headaches, asthma, bronchitis, leukemia, meningitis, heart disease, kidney disease, hormonal imbalances, leukemia, eczema, liver problems, and much more… In addition to the health benefits, it helps the body remove harmful bacteria from the mouth that can easily enter into blood stream.

How to do Oil Pulling:

So here’s how it works… It’s super easy! Just take 1 tablespoon of vegetable-based oil (preferably organic coconut oil) and swish it around your mouth for 15-20 minutes then spit it out and rinse well. It is recommended to do this first thing in the morning prior to eating or drinking.

  • Put 1 Tablespoon of Oil into the mouth. I would suggest using an organic based coconut oil and letting it melt in the mouth before swishing.
  • Swish in mouth for 15-20 minutes. According to the docs, this specific timing is crucial in order to break down plaque and bacteria without allowing those toxins to reabsorb into the body. I usually swish it around as I make coffee, take a shower, etc. DO NOT SWALLOW! This oil is full of toxins and bacteria, which is harmful for the body.
  • Spit out and Rinse Well. Rinse out your mouth to remove any residual bacteria and brush your teeth thoroughly.

There you have it, now go out there and swish some coconut oil in your mouth! Improve your oral hygiene, overall health, and conquer the world. Oh yeah, and one last thing… Spread the word; share this awesome simple therapy with your loved ones.
